On 27 May 2017, the SCO pavilion at the EXPO 2017 International Specialised Exhibition was officially presented at SCO headquarters in Beijing. The exhibition will take place in Astana, the capital of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The presentation involved representatives of media outlets, civil society and the business community.

SCO Secretary-General Rashid Alimov addressed the participants and informed them about the upcoming pavilion in great detail. The SCO is to take part in the international exhibition for the first time in its history, he noted. "This is a great honour and responsibility for us, all the more so as the SCO is the only regional organisation that will have a pavilion at EXPO 2017.

The opening of the exhibition coincides with a meeting of the SCO Heads of State Council whose participants are expected to adopt historical decisions on the organisation's future, Mr Alimov said. "The EXPO's theme on the energy of the future will create synergy with the SCO's Shanghai Spirit.' This synergy will be the main theme of our events, and anyone coming to the SCO pavilion will see it," Mr Alimov said.

He also told the guests that a number of attendant events on various aspects of the organisation's activity will take place at the SCO pavilion. "We have agreed with the EXPO's managers to celebrate SCO Day on 27 August. That same day, Astana will host an international SCO marathon with over 5,000 people. A very detailed programme lies ahead, and I'm inviting everyone to visit the SCO pavilion in Astana," Mr Alimov said in conclusion.

EXPO 2017 will take place on 10 June 10 September in Astana, the capital of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and will involve 115 countries and 22 international organisations under the theme Future Energy.

In August 2016, on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the EXPO 2017 Commissioner invited the SCO to take part in the international specialised exhibition. The SCO has never taken part in the EXPO before.
