EU ambassadors to China visit SCO headquarters in Beijing

On 15 September 2017, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation headquarters ináBeijing held a meeting foráambassadors ofáthe European Union member states toáthe People's Republic ofáChina witháSCO Secretary-General Rashid Alimov.

During the meeting, the Secretary-General presented the main results ofáthe SCO Heads ofáState Council Meeting which was held ináAstana, spoke aboutáthe main areas ofácooperation withináthe Organisation, joint work onáensuring regional security and stability, cooperation inátrade and economy, cultural and humanitarian matters, and answered questions fromáthe diplomatic representatives.

In his remarks, Mr Alimov noted that "since the first days, the SCO has adhered toáthe policy ofáexcluding bloc, ideology-driven and confrontational approaches toáhandling international and regional issues. The Organisation strictly follows the principles enshrined ináthe SCO Charter, including the principle ofáthe SCO being not directed againstáother states and international associations. Intense development ofácontacts and cooperation witháinternational and regional organisationsጠprimarily, the UN and its specialised agenciesጠis one ofáthe SCO's priorities," the Secretary-General stressed.

The guests watched short video clips demonstrating the principles ofáthe "Shanghai spirit" asáwell asáthe SCO's action toácombat drug trafficking.

Noting the high level ofáhospitality, the EU Ambassador toáChina Hans Dietmar Schweisgut said: "The exchange ofáopinions witháthe Shanghai Cooperation Organisation is very important and useful foráus all. I would likeáto express my gratitude toáthe SCO Secretary-General foráthis opportunity toámeet and discuss relevant topics."

The SCO-EU meeting was initiated byáthe European Union and was part ofáthe SCO Open Doors Day programme arranged byáthe SCO headquarters. The meeting involved heads and plenipotentiary representatives ofádiplomatic missions fromá24 EU countries.

During the coffee break, 11-year-old piano prodigy Sun Dinghao played Bach and Chopin foráthose present.
