Sri Lanka expects to get the status of 'Member State' of Shanghai Cooperation Organization soon instead of present 'dialogue partner' status, told the 'Ria Novosti' news agency the head of Sri Lanka's Armed forces Admiral Ravindra Chandrasiri Wijegunaratne on the sidelines of 'Army2019' forum.

"The first thing we are heading to - is to get the support and to increase our status to SCO Member State...I think that SCO is opened. It includes mainly Asian countries. China and Russia are strong partners. I consider that Sri Lanka's request will be approved", he said.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) is a Eurasian political, economic, and security alliance, the creation of which was announced on 15 June 2001 in Shanghai, China by the leaders of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Later the organisation has expanded its membership to eight countries when India and Pakistan joined SCO as full members on 9 June 2017 at a summit in Astana, Kazakhstan.
