This week the Security Council has discussed the Secretary Generals report of UN mediation role in adjustment of disputes.

According to the Russian ambassador to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin, regional organizations, including the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and the Collective Security Treaty Organization must be more involved in mediation attempts. The Russian diplomat also underlined the significance of careful recruitment of personnel for mediation attempts that requires a great deal of art and tactfulness.

It is not allowed to impose unilateral decisions, as also to give rise to suspect a mediator of some prejudices or preferences in relation to one of the parties. The mediators non-compliance with one of these requirements inevitably leads to problems arising. Suffice it to mention how the case with Kosovo settlement was.

As Vitaly Churkin added, success can be expected only through the mediation that bases on the parties positions approximation.
