Mongolias New President Elected
26.05.2009 15:54
The current Mongolias President Nambaryn Enkhbayar recognized his defeat in the head of state election. He congratulated the democratic candidate Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorzh on election win and wished him a successful work.

Counting of votes still continues, but according to the data from campaign headquarters, Elbegdorzh has won, having polled about 53% votes.

Elbegdorzh was elected deputy of the Great national khural three times from 1990 till 2000. He actively participated in the preparation and working out of a new Mongolias constitution, where defense of human rights, commitment to principles of democracy and market economy were guaranteed. In the capacity of a Chairman of the State Rehabilitation Committee Elbegdorzh took the lead in adoption of a Rehabilitation Act, by which over 37 thousand citizens were rehabilitated.

After the democratic coalitions win in the election of 1996 he was the Parliament majority leader and in 1996-1998 he was a vice-speaker. Elbegdorzh held twice a post of the country prime minister. In 2008 he sent in his resignation.

Altogether in Mongolia 1.6 million citizens are entitled to vote. 64.61% of them took part in the election.
