Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Secretary-General Rashid Alimov's busy agenda atthe Eastern Economic Forum has been rounded offby reviewing the results ofthe meetings, negotiations invarious formats and the events ofthe 2017 Eastern Economic Forum.

The Secretary-General attended the forum's key event, a plenary session withPresident Vladimir Putin, South Korean President Moon Jae-in, Mongolian President Khaltmaagiin Battulga, and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzō Abe.

Rashid Alimov's meeting withRussian Transport Minister Maksim Sokolov focused ontransportation cooperation withinthe SCO and the development oftransit potential inthe Eurasian continent, primarily inthe context ofthe SCO Agreement onInternational Road Transportation Facilitation.

During the panel session Fostering Cooperation fromLisbon toVladivostok, Mr Alimov talked aboutthe SCO countries' cooperation infighting security threats and challenges, international terrorism, drug trafficking and organised crime. He stressed that trust and mutual respect betweenpartners was the most important element ofstable cooperation. "During the 16 years ofthe SCO, its member countries have developed a model oftrust-based relations founded onthe principles ofmutual respect, equality and regard foreach other's interests," he said. "The SCO partnership is not aimed againstanyone, it is meant topromote joint development and strengthen versatile multilateral cooperation betweenSCO members. This is the key tothe Organization's success and achievements."

He also noted that "it is this approach tointerstate interaction that can guarantee the development ofcooperation inthe vast space stretching fromLisbon toVladivostok and serve asthe basis forstability inthe macro-region, forpeace and joint sustainable development." He also stressed that "The SCO is not a military bloc, although an uncompromising fight againstthe terrorist threat dictates the need todevelop and strengthen the mechanisms spearheaded atthe radical extermination ofterrorist activity. A special role inthis context is played bythe regular Peaceful Mission joint all-arms anti-terrorism exercises held bythe armed forces ofthe SCO member states, exercises that facilitate joint training ofpractical skills needed inconducting military operations againstterrorist groups."

The panel session was attended byprominent experts and political scientists fromRussia, the US, the Republic ofKorea and other countries.

Leading Russian and international news agencies showed high interest inthe SCO, testifying tothe growing public attention tothe Organisation's activity. The SCO Secretary-General gave several interviews tothe agencies and commented onsome key international topics.

The Eastern Economic Forum was held inVladivostok (Russky Island) on6-7 September 2017. The forum was attended byover 6,000 people fromover 60 countries, withthe biggest delegations coming fromJapan (249 people), South Korea (289 people), and China (75 people). There were six delegates fromNorth Korea.

Other participants included 775 business representatives, withtop managers ofthe major global corporations amongthem.

It was the first time that the SCO Secretary-General attended the forum.
