Integration of the SCO Humanities Universities
02.06.2009 12:35
Anna Zharkaya

The SCO Humanities Universities Consortium has been created. An agreement on its founding was concluded on May 28 within the walls of Moscow State Linguistic University (MSLU). This uncommon event of cultural space was held within the scope of the Week of Education of the SCO member states.

The document has been indorsed by many signatures of chancellors, in Russian and Chinese being official languages of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. Here is the list of higher educational institutions participating in the project: Каzakh University of International Relations and World Languages named after Abylai Khan (Alma Ata), Kwangtung University of International Trade and Foreign Languages (China), Capital Teachers' Training University (Beijing), Beijing Foreign Studies University, Bishkek Humanities University (Kirghizia), Tajik-Russian Slavic University, Tajik State Institute of Foreign Languages, Irkutsk Linguistic University, Pyatigorsk Linguistic University, Moscow State Psychological-and-Pedagogical University and Moscow State Linguistic University (MSLU).

Commenting this event, the chancellor of Каzakh University of International Relations Salima Kunanbaeva emphasized the key fact: “The Eurasian regional educational integration has been accomplished.” Now, after the preparatory stage has been completed, she believes, it is time to come down to elaboration of specific education programs.

MSLU vice-chancellor Yuri Sukharev saw in the SCO Humanities Universities Consortium a “form of the SCO Network University horizontal development.” He reminded that there are no coordinated international trade training programs so far, particularly, regional studies, linguistics and cross-cultural communication, but at the same time between the partner universities there are spanning many years traditions of scientific, teaching aids and methods cooperation, student and teacher exchanges. While public authorities are handling matters of financing, passage of normative acts for the SCO Network University, specialists will begin to draw up joint academic curriculums and scientific projects for masters and postgraduates training with a specialization in regional studies.

The assembled in Moscow chancellors of the SCO universities and representative of the scientific community noted that the creation of a single educational space is an important factor for the Eurasian dialogue, a way of humanitarian strengthening of SCO, good neighborly relations between nations.
